Pebble smart watch now fully iOS 7 compatible

The Pebble smart watch has received an update that adds full iOS 7 notification support.

We really liked the Pebble smart watch when we reviewed it back in June, but one of the caveats we listed was “Reduced iOS functionality.” Put simply, this was a very good Android companion, but only an okay iPhone one thanks to the uncooperative nature of iOS 6.

Now, with Apple’s more third party device-embracing iOS 7 having been on the market for close to two months, the company has launched an update that could transform our appraisal.

Pebble now has full iOS 7 Notification Center support. This means that notifications should be pushed to the Kickstarter-funded smart watch without hassle, delay, or exception.

There is one tiny catch to this iOS 7 operation, though. You’ll have to go with banner notifications in the iOS 7 settings menu. A new Pebble app has been submitted to Apple, and should be on App Store soon.

Additionally, the Pebble team has announced the availability of SDK 2.0. This adds a bunch of new features through four new APIs, all aimed at making app development for the wrist-mounted device that little bit easier. They’ll enable apps to access online data, as well as the accelerometer, as well as to store data.

As if to prove the point, the company has also taken the opportunity to announce new app partnerships with Foursquare, GoPro, iControl and Yelp. Pebble is hoping to ship these by the end of the year.

In its latest blog posting, Pebble also announces that there are now 190,000 Pebble watches out there on people’s wrists.
