Pebble Health fitness app jogs on to Pebble Time watches

Smartwatch pioneer Pebble has announced a new fitness-tracking app for users of its more recent smartwatches.

The new Pebble Health application is arriving on the Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel and Pebble Time Round devices.

Described as “a friendly, seamless approach to fitness tracking”, the app was developed in collaboration with researchers at Stanford University.

Rather than handcuffing users to specific step counts or sleep goals, Pebble Health will encourage users to beat their averages by highlighting on-screen graphs and setting a new target.

It automatically tracks daily activity and sleep phases, while information will be delivered straight back to the Timeline interface.

Users will see a Timeline pin surmising their sleep when they wake up, and see a report of the step count before they nod off to sleep at the end of the day.

As an added bonus, there will be some smart pins that will inform users of good times to squeeze in some steps – before calendar appointments, for example.

All Pebble Time owners will need to do is update to the latest Pebble app for iOS and Android to begin using the app. It’s also compatible with Google Fit and Apple Health, so all data will be synced back to those platforms.

Unfortunately for owners of the original Pebble Classic and Pebble Classic Steel, they’ll miss out.

However, there was better news for those folks last week when Pebble announced it would be retrofitting the first-gen devices with the new Timeline OS.

The firmware update is available to beta test for Android users right now before a full launch on both platforms next month.
