PDP’s battery tech charges your Xbox One controller in 60 seconds

PDP’s new battery tech can charge your Xbox One controller in just 60 seconds.

A new battery and fast-charging dock claims to be able to give your Xbox One wireless controller 8 hours of play time on just a one-minute charge.

One of the biggest issues with our wireless controllers and lots of smart tech – the PS4’s DualShock 4 and smartwatches in particular – is the battery life.

We’re fed up of having to have a tethered controller while we charge them, or constantly having to buy new batteries.

However, on display at CES 2016, is PDP’s new technology that can provide eight hours of play on a single charge.

“In the past it has been about either your dry cell battery chemistries or your lithium ion or lithium polymers, but we’ve developer a new type of power pack,” said PDP’s Director of Product Development Christopher Dingle to Polygon. “[Our battery is] a physical reaction rather than a chemical reaction.”

Due to patents pending, DIngle couldn’t go into the specifics of the tech but there was a prototype of the tech on show at the Las Vegas trade show.

The new battery will initially be limited to the Xbox One pad, but the company hopes that the rapid-charging packs could extend to things like phones or laptops, with a variety of price points.

There is also a PS4 controller version in the works, thank goodness.

Apparently pre-orders for the tech will open near the end of 2016, with prices tipped to start around the $99 (£68) mark.
