Pack An mPack From Eupac

Try saying that fast ten times in a row.

Despite sounding like a logical alphabetical evolution of dead rappers, the PQI mPack P600 distributed by Eupac looks to be far more than West Coast Drive-by fodder.

Designed to be ‘the next step in the mobile market’, the P600 is a curious device that is neither PDA, multimedia player or smartphone, yet packs in a 20GB HDD, plays movies, music, displays photos and can be fitted with optional GPS.

A 4in 480 x 272 16.7m colour LCD is at the heart of the P600, while Eupac makes the bold claim that the 3D Dolby Digital supporting 4W stereo speakers are ‘the world’s first and best in any PMP’ (Portable Multimedia Player). You’ll still use headphones at every opportunity though…

Video support is extensive running Mpeg 1, 2, 4, AVI, Mpg, Dat, Vob and Mob and converter software is supplied for Asf files and surprisingly needed for WMV. Audio handles everything including the kitchen sink with native MP3, WMA, CBR/VBR, Ogg, AC3, WAV and MA4 compatibility. Jpeg, Gif and Bmp images display no problemo while PNG, DSC raw files and a plain text viewer are welcome bonuses.

The dimensions are rather more standard at 120 x 94.5 x 27mm and 290g, though its neat clamshell design will protect the screen from bumps and scuffs. As I said, the P600 certainly isn’t a full fledged PDA, but it does pack in some basic functions such as an address book, clock, calculator and calendar as well as a few java based games.

If the mPack P600 does it for you, and there’s no real reason why it shouldn’t, then toddle down to shops now where you’ll find it on sale for £339 including VAT.
