Overseas growth helps Netflix smash 75m subscriber landmark

Netflix now has more than 75 million paying customers around the globe, a record figure largely driven by international growth.

In its latest earnings report, the streaming pioneer announced it had added a whopping 5.59 million subscribers during the last three months of 2015, four million of which came from overseas.

The company also added 1.56 million subscribers in its US homeland during the quarter. During the period, Netflix brought in $1.823 billion in revenue, of which $43 million counted as profit.

The totals are even more impressive when you consider the published figures don’t even include new subscribers from Netflix’s recently announced global expansion. At CES 2016, the company announced it was adding 130 new countries to the Netflix roster.

Given the company’s aggressive investment in original programming, such a healthy number in the profit column is extreme validation of the firm’s strategy.

The company is riding high from the recent success of new shows like Jessica Jones, Making A Murder and its first feature film Beasts of No Nation.

Netflix plans to double down on the original content in 2016. In 2015 it debuted 16 original series, but 31 are in the works this year, including a new animated series from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening.

There’ll also be 10 feature films, 30 children TV shows, 12 documentaries and 10 stand-up comedy specials.

Like its most famous original character Frank Underwood, Netflix is slowly rising to the top. It looks like there’s no stopping it now…
