Over-the-air software update makes the Tesla P85D even faster

The Tesla Model S P85D is about to get even faster, and you won’t have to lift a finger. That’s because the tweak will happen without you knowing, thanks to an over-the-air software update like on your phone.

The car was already quite nippy, going from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds. The update will shave a fraction of a second off that, making it as fast as a McLaren MP4-12C or Ferrari Enzo. Which is mental for a five-seater.

Tesla founder Elon Musk announced the update last night. “Tesla P85D 0 to 60mph acceleration will improve by ~0.1 sec soon via over-the-air software update to inverter algorithm,” he tweeted.

He added that the standard P85 acceleration would also improve, but not by as much.

Tesla has been pushing out software updates for its cars for a few years now. It makes perfect sense. We update the software on our phones and games consoles to add features and improve performance, so why not do the same with our cars? It’s certainly more convenient that taking it to your local dealer.

Other car manufacturers will no doubt start doing the same soon, especially with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto onboard. Tesla has been ahead of the curve for some time now when it comes to car tech. Hardly surprising when you have Elon Musk, the billionaire behind PayPal, at the helm.

Musk recently said he would build a test track for his Hyperloop 700mph tube transport system.
