OUYA Console Nets $6m from Kickstarter, Links with OnLive and VEVO

OUYA, the upcoming Android-based games console, has so far raised more than $6.3 million on Kickstarter from nearly 50,000 backers.

The fundraising period ends on August 9 and already the company has made some important new announcements.

One is a partnership with cloud-gaming service OnLive, showing that the console has potential beyond simply being an Android games platform.

The OnLive tie-in will add hundreds of titles, and the console is pegged to get Final Fantasy as well as a prequel to Human Element, which is an OUYA exclusive.

OUYA has also teamed up with VEVO to bring music videos to the console. Commenting on the deal, OUYA’s Julie Uhrman said her venture is also about “entertainment beyond gaming”.

VEVO and OUYA believe this will become a popular way to see HD music videos on the TV, with a high amount of user control. The VEVO library carries videos from the likes of Jay Z, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Kings of Leon, The Killers and Florence & the Machine. The line-up also includes live concerts and original music programming.

Lastly, OUYA announced a limited edition console and controller bundle, only available to backers in the final week on Kickstarter and who pledge at least $140. The entry level price to get a standard OUYA is $99.

In response to suggestions, the makers have changed the buttons on the controller so they now spell out OUYA. Nice touch.
