OS X 10.10’s Handoff may not work for everyone

One of the most exciting features of the forthcoming OS X 10.10 update, Handoff, may not be compatible with every OS X and iOS device.

Handoff is the name of a feature that creates a greater link between your Mac and your iOS 8-powered iPhone or iPad. It will let you take calls on your computer and seamlessly continue web sessions simply by having the two different devices in close proximity.

However, according to German site Apfeleimer, there’s a catch. It reckons that Handoff uses the Bluetooth 4.0 LE standard to do its thing, which will automatically exclude a far few Apple devices from the mix.

More specifically, this would mean that anyone with an iPad 2 or a Mac dating back to before the launch of the 2011 MacBook Air will be unable to use Handoff on their device.

Older iPads and iPhones, of course, won’t support iOS 8, so won’t have access to Handoff anyway.

Bluetooth 4.0 LE – which stands for “Low Energy” – will enable Apple’s computers and mobile devices to keep looking out for one another without excessive battery drain. This is said to be at the heart of what Handoff does.

This is all highly speculative at this point, of course, as Apple has provided no guidance on how Handoff will work or which devices will or will not support it. But it does make a certain amount of sense.
