Oppo A72: Oppo’s new budget phone is here to challenge the Moto G

The Oppo A72 is an affordable smartphone that includes a 48 MP quad camera setup along with a full HD display, a long-lasting battery and 4K video smarts. Can it steal the best cheap phone crown from the Moto G?

The A Series sits below the flagship Find X2 and Find X2 Pro in Oppo’s smartphone lineup, offering a more budget-friendly alternative with some premium specs thrown in to try and tempt you away from some of the pricier options around.

What features does the Oppo A72 have?

The Oppo A72 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665, the same SoC in the Oppo A9 and Oppo A5, both of which received four stars in our reviews.

The 6.5-inch, full HD display has a screen-to-body ratio of 90.5%, with 1.73mm bezels on the sides, a 2400 x 1080 resolution and 405 PPI pixel density.

The A72 features a 48 MP AI quad camera, with an 8 MP ultra wide angle lens, a 16 MP front camera and Ultra Night Mode 2.0. The rear camera is also capable of shooting video in 4K with stability built-in to combat shaky hands.

As far as audio is concerned, the phone features dual stereo speakers at the top and bottom of the device for surround sound effects and uses Dirac 2.0 to switch between different sound scenarios.

The A72 is fitted with a 5000mAh battery paired with 18W Fast Charge, and includes 4 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM. The phone features fingerprint unlock on its side and is NFC enabled for contactless payments.

The smartphone also boasts Oppo’s Hyper Boost gaming feature. The software trick balances power consumption and performance to give a more fluid gaming experience with an intelligent frame rate.

The Oppo A72 is available to buy now from Carphone Warehouse, Virgin Media and EE in the UK, with prices starting at £219. The phone comes in Twilight Black and Aurora Purple finishes.
