OnePlus X is finally official, and beautiful too

OnePlus may have only been in the smartphone game for just over a year, but it’s already launched its third handset.

The OnePlus X is now official, followings months of rumours and speculation.

It’s the company’s first mid-range handset – although OnePlus claims ‘flagship-level performance’ – and follows on from the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2.

Here’s the full OnePlus X spec list:

  • Display: 5-inch, 1080p (441ppi)
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (2.3GHz, quad-core)
  • GPU: Adreno 330
  • RAM: 3GB LPDDR3
  • Storage: 16GB eMMC (expandable via microSD)
  • Primary camera: 13-megapixel
  • Secondary camera: 8-megapixel
  • Battery: 2,525mAh
  • Connectivity: Dual-SIM, 4G/LTE, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Charging: Micro USB
  • OS: OxygenOS (based on Android 5.1.1)
  • Dimensions: 140 x 69 x 6.9mm
  • Weight: 138g (Onyx), 160g (Ceramic)

That’s all par for the course, so is there anything special about the OnePlus X?

What’s most interesting is that the OnePlus X is available in two variants – Onyx and Ceramic.

The OnePlus X Onyx is fashioned from black glass on a metal bezel, and lands as the lightest and slimmest OnePlus smartphone to date.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus X Ceramic is crafted in a process that takes 25 days.

The production begins with a 5mm-thick zirconia mold used to shape ceramic that’s fire-baked at temperatures up to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit for 28 hours.

Each backplate then undergoes three methods of polishing before it’s ready to ship to consumers.

As the process is a little painstaking, OnePlus is only offering 10,000 OnePlus X Ceramic devices.

“Today’s smartphone user strives to find the perfect balance of style and performance,” says Pete Lau, OnePlus CEO.

Lau continues: “The OnePlus X is a design-centric device – chic and powerful enough to fit any lifestyle.”

As usual, the OnePlus X Onyx is only available with an invite in Europe, starting on November 5. The Ceramic release date is slightly later at November 24.

The Ceramic Edition will have its own Ceramic-specific invite due to the limited nature of the product.

The OnePlus X Onyx retails at £199, while the OnePlus X Ceramic costs £269.
