OnePlus reveals HydrogenOS release date

OnePlus is gearing up to launch a new version of its custom-built operating system called HydrogenOS.

The China-based smartphone manufacturer has re-worked its existing OxygenOS for release on home soil.

Both HydrogenOS and OxygenOS are based on the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop build, and stay very close to stock Android.

The company plans to release the new software on May 28 in China, and it’s very likely the software won’t be launched anywhere else.

The launch event will take place in Beijing, with OnePlus expected to focus on battery and performance improvements.

OnePlus originally developed OxygenOS after software-modder Cyanogen signed an exclusivity deal with Micromax in India, which meant that OnePlus could no longer use CM12 on OnePlus One handsets in the country.

The new Hydrogen spin-off will help OnePlus better cater to its core home market.

Cyanogen and OnePlus have now formally ended their partnership, so we’ll likely be hearing a lot more about OxygenOS and HydrogenOS in the future.

It’s still not clear whether the OnePlus Two will use stock Android, CyanogenMod, or OxygenOS.

We’d say the latter is more likely, but we’ll have to wait until the device’s Q3 launch to find out.
