OnePlus One pre-order system coming soon

OnePlus has confirmed that it will soon be launching a pre-order system for its nigh-on unobtainable bargain smartphone, the OnePlus One.

As regular readers will know, we think rather highly of the OnePlus One. After all, it offers a premium Android experience for just £230.

There’s just one snag: you have to jump through hoops to get one. Up to now, the Chinese company has persisted with a torturous invite system that makes earning the right to buy one feel like a lottery win. It’s just a little bit crazy.

But that’s all set to change. Speaking on a Reddit AMA recently, a company spokesperson announced the following:

“We are working on a pre-orders system, we were initially aiming for September but it’s been slightly delayed, hopefully we’ll be ready to launch it in October.”

In other words, you’ll soon be able to put your name down for  OnePlus One just as you would any other smartphone. This particular one launched about four months ago, but never mind.

Of course, this is no guarantee that there are sufficient numbers of OnePlus One handsets to meet the undoubted demand out there, and there may still be quite a wait before most people can land one.

But it’s definitely an improvement on the arbitrary system that’s currently in place – one that flipped from excitingly exclusive to tiresome publicity stunt about, oh, two months ago.

Still, as much as we’d like to stay angry at OnePlus, the One is still an excellent piece of kit. It’s got a superb 5.5-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 801 CPU, and the custom CyanogenMod interface – and all for half the price of a Samsung Galaxy S5 or an HTC One M8.
