OnePlus and Cyanogen finally call it quits

OnePlus and Cyanogen are finally calling it a day, after a partnership of almost a year on the OnePlus One smartphone.
Relations between the two companies have been frosty for a while. Last year, Cyanogen signed an exclusive deal with Micromax in India.
This meant that OnePlus couldn’t sell its Cyanogen-powered handsets in the country, which led to the firm developing an in-house operating system, dubbed OxygenOS.
Now, however, Cyanogen wants to drop OnePlus to work with new vendors in the east to help strengthen the brand globally, as reported by PCWorld.

OnePlus infamously attempted to throttle how its sales scaled by using an invite-only retail method.
Unfortunately, this left many would-be customers angry that they couldn’t buy the handset they wanted to.

McMaster went on to claim that Cyanogen was a big reason for the OnePlus One’s success.
“Without Cyanogen, OnePlus would have sold like one device in international markets,” he explained. “Essentially they built their brand on the back of Cyanogen.”
Cyanogen has confirmed that it will continue to support OnePlus One devices running on its operating system, but the relationship will go no further.
