OnePlus 2 camera details revealed

The first solid details about the OnePlus 2 camera have emerged online.

We’re eagerly awaiting the OnePlus 2’s official release on 27 July, but one popular vlogger has managed to gain access to an early unit.

As we reported yesterday, YouTuber Marques Brownlee has been given a OnePlus 2 ahead of its official launch. It seems the primary reason for this is to put the OnePlus 2’s camera through its paces.

To that end, Brownlee has posted a video running through some of the camera’s features.

The OnePlus 2’s camera has a 13-megapixel sensor, shooting 4:3 photos at 12.4 megapixels or 16:9 photos at 7.9 megapixels. It also seems to sport an f/2.0 aperture and benefits from laser autofocus.

The image samples Brownlee provides appear to back up his impression that the OnePlus 2’s camera is “pretty solid”, with decent sharpness and okay dynamic range – even without HDR mode activated. He does state that there’s “nothing too insane or out of the ordinary here”.

Perhaps most impressive to us, however, is that all of the snaps were taken in a simple point-and-shoot manner, with no fiddling with composition or manual modes.

Additional modes are included, though. Beyond the HDR mode, there’s Clear-shot, which is supposed to result in sharper images when zoomed in. Brownlee notes that this is likely to be a faked effect.

Low-light performance appears to be adequate, although Brownlee isn’t sure whether or not the phone has OIS. His guess, given the shaky nature of the videos he shot, would be that it hasn’t.

Talking of video, the OnePlus 2 camera shoots 4K as well as super slo-mo 720p.
