Ofcom Reports Gadget Spend Defies Downturn

The industry body has today presented its sixth Communications Market Report into the £52 billion TV, radio, broadband, telecoms and mobile industries and it reveals just how important these services have become to consumers despite the economic downturn.

According to its results, when asked which items they were likely to cut back on, 47 per cent of those surveyed would choose dinner, 41 per cent DIY and 41 per cent on holidays. By contrast just 19 per cent would look to reduce mobile phone spending, 16 per cent lower their TV subscriptions and 10 per cent lower or stop their broadband services.

Other general trends see national broadband penetration up from 58 per cent in 2008 to 68 per cent in 2009 (47 per cent of which are looking to take bundled deals) and average online time per day has jumped from just nine minutes in 2004 to 25 minutes in 2009. Perhaps the biggest leap comes in the PVR category however with DVR ownership up 29 per cent since 2008 to now cover 27 per cent of the population. VoIP is also rapidly gaining in popularity with 21 per cent of users having used the service in 2008 compared to 14 per cent in 2007.

“Despite the recession, people are spending more time watching TV, using their mobile phone or accessing the internet,” concluded Ofcom strategy and market developments partner Peter Philips. “They would rather do without meals out or holidays than give up their phone, broadband or pay TV package.”

All makes sense to us, but we would say this – wouldn’t we?
