Continues to lead the field by a considerable margin...
This is one company determined to single handedly push SSDs into the mainstream… and we love them for it!
Just one month after OCZ’s price and performance game-changing Core range we find version 2.0 is here! Dubbed the 2.5in ‘Core V2 series’ they do exactly what we’d hoped: upped capacities and performance as well as throw in something a little unexpected…
Firstly however the fundamentals: gone are the typical SSD multiplier capacities (16/32/64/128GB) to be replaced by more HDD-esque sizes of 30GB, 60GB, 120GB and a new drool-worthy 250GBer. Secondly, read performance jumps from an already speedy 100MBps (for 32GB and 64GB models) and 143MBps (128GB) to a standard 170MBps all round while write speed hops from 80MBps (32GB & 64GB) and 93MBps (128GB) to a standard 98MBps.
As for that surprise: each drive has been fitted with a mini USB port for applying future speed enhancing firmware updates – a wonderful addition considering the major differences this can make to SSD technology. Yep, we’d love to have been able to use it to hook up to PCs like an external drive as well but this is still one ingenious and considerate attempt by OCZ to future proof your investment.
Reliability is as good as ever too with MTBF (mean time before failure) rated at 1.5m hours and a two year warranty will come as standard on all drives.
“As SSD technology progresses, OCZ will continue to release updated and enhanced solutions to ensure our customers stay on the leading edge,” said OCZ CEO Ryan Petersen. “The new Core V2 drives offer consumers and system integrators increased capacities up to 250GB, improved read and write performance and faster seek time, all coupled with a new mini USB port empowering customers with the ability to further improve performance and compatibility by updating firmware in the future.”
Sadly pricing and availability haven’t yet been disclosed this time around, but I’m hopeful they won’t carry much of a premium over the original Core Series. *Clasps hands together* Hope, beg and pray that is…
