Oculus teaming with Samsung for new VR-based social network

Oculus VR has announced it’s launching a made-for-VR social network, where Samsung Gear VR owners can find friends and play games together.

Anyone with a Gear VR will be able to sign up for an Oculus Social profile from tomorrow and embark upon playing a new series of Social Games.

The first, Social Trivia, is made by Oculus and will go live this week. It will enable Gear VR owners to pit their wits against friends around a virtual games table.

“Social Trivia, created by Oculus, is a new game that lets you and up to four friends compete in a battle of knowledge. Look for it in the Concepts section of the Oculus Store,” the company wrote on its official blog.

The second release, Herobound: Gladiators is described as a multi-player adventure game, which is already available in the Oculus Store.

Gamers will be able to “band together with up to four people to conquer goblins and demons in arena battlefields. Use integrated voice chat to talk and strategise in real-time for co-op action.”

Anyone with a Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy Note 5 and 4 will be able to slide their handset into a Gear VR to experience the new features.

Beyond the social launch, Oculus also announced users will be able to add their Facebook accounts to Oculus Video.
This will enable a personalised feed of the 360-degree videos available, via its Facebook overlord.

In the coming weeks, Oculus says that users will be able to share their favourite videos within VR. Presumably, these videos will appear on the user’s personal timeline within Oculus Social.
