Oculus VR has confirmed that its Oculus Rift DK2 headsets will start shipping to developers this month.
If you pre-ordered the latest Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, your DK2 should arrive by the end of the month.
According to a new Oculus blog post, the Development Kit 2 (DK2) has left the production facility and the first VR headsets will start pounding doormats by July 14.
“We expect to ship roughly 10,000 DK2s from the factory in July, with just over half of the units through distribution centres and on their way to doorsteps before the end of the month,” explained Oculus VR.
However, if you weren’t one of the 12,500 to pre-order DK2 in the first 36 hours, you might have a little bit of a wait for your order to arrive.
“We’re now over 45,000 DK2 pre-orders, which is incredibly exciting. That said, we’re slightly behind in manufacturing and there’s currently a high chance that some developers with estimated shipping in July may not have their DK2s shipped until August.”
So if only 10,000 DK2 headsets are set to ship this month, the rest of the 35,000 pre-order customers are going to have to wait until August, at least.
“DK2 has lower latency, higher framerate, higher resolution and low persistence along with full six dot positional tracking. All these combined allow for much more comfortable user experiences,” said Oculus VR founder, Palmer Luckey.
The latest developer kit Oculus Rift’s dual displays have a 960 x 1080p HD resolution and the headset uses a low persistence OLED display to reduce juddering and motion blur.
DK2 also uses low-latency positional head tracking via an external camera to more accurately detect your movements. It also has a built-in latency detector and a USB accessory port.
