Oculus Rift and interface tipped to feature Facebook branding in the future

Facebook has plans to rebrand the Oculus Rift with a new interface and logo in the future, according to an inside source.

Following the revelation that Facebook has acquired Oculus VR, the company responsible for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, for a cool $2 billion, it seems the company could undergo some major changes in the future.

A new report from the NY Times quotes a “person involved with the deal” who has been forced to remain anonymous for now. This source states that Facebook has plans to completely redesign the Oculus hardware and logo to be a little more Facebook-influenced.

“According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorised by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo”, reads the report.

In an official statement, Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said Oculus VR’s plans to create immersive games would not be changed and the company would be allowed to still do this independently.

“We’re going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnership to support more games,” said Zuckerberg. “Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.”

However, Zuckerberg did not say that Oculus experience outside of gaming would be created apart from the Facebook brand, leaving room for the aforementioned information to be very much correct.

The Facebook acquisition is expected to be completed by Q2 2014, with the company buying out Oculus for $1.6 billion worth of shares and the rest in cash.
