Oculus Rift 1st-Gen lifespan ‘closer to mobile phone than console’
The first consumer edition of the Oculus Rift VR headset will have a lifespan closer to a mobile phone than a console, according to the founder of Oculus VR.
During a Reddit AMA late on Wednesday evening, Palmer Luckey commented on how long it might be before a second iteration of the headset would be available to consumers.
On the day the first edition became available for pre-order, Luckey said it would last “somewhere between a console and a mobile phone, much closer to a mobile phone. The PC spec for Rift won’t change during the 1st generation.”

Luckey, who has suffered heavy criticism over the unexpectedly high pricing of the Rift headset, also there are “quite a few features” that didn’t make it into the first consumer model, which Oculus still hopes to fit in to future iterations.
He added: “We have a lot going on in Oculus Research, some of which will make it into the next product, some of which will go into products even further down the road. VR is still advancing very rapidly, there will be some pretty huge technological shifts happening.”
Asked about future products beyond the Rift and Touch, Luckey said: “Yes, we are working on a wide range of VR technology. No, not willing to let more secrets slip here.”
Today, it seems, remains just the beginning for Oculus.
