Obi-Wan Kenobi might be getting his own Star Wars spin-off movie

Disney is reportedly plotting a Star Wars spin-off centred around Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Hollywood Reporter reckons Disney has put the feelers out to Stephen Daldry to direct the film, which doesn’t yet have a script.

According to the sources, the talks to obtain Daldry’s services are “at the earliest of stages.”

Daldry, who directed Billy Elliot and The Hours, would oversee the development and writing of the movie alongside Lucasfilm, the report says.

Should Disney decide to go ahead with the project, talk will inevitably turn to whether Ewan McGregor should reprise his role as the legendary Jedi master.

The Scottish actor’s performances were one of the few bright spots of Episodes I-III. And, just recently, he has expressed an interest in returning to the role.

In April he told Entertainment Weekly: “There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything.

“But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.”

Another Star Wars story

Kenobi is one of many characters who spanned the first two Star Wars trilogies, and was played by Alec Guinness in Episode IV, V and VI.

It would be interesting to explore his story during the 20 years between delivering baby Luke to Tatooine and handing young Skywalker his father’s light saber.

Naturally, the film would standalone from the main Star Wars saga and, like Rogue One, would likely be dubbed “A Star Wars Story.”

Disney’s troubled Han Solo spin-off is still scheduled to debut in theatres next May. Episode VIII arrives this Christmas and Episode IX will complete the new trilogy in 2019.

The entertainment giant is also thought to be considering a spin-off for bounty hunter Boba Fett.
