O2 Trials Mobile Tele

Fancy a bit of the Beeb on the bus?

Multi megapixel photos, hours of music and increasingly advanced 3D games clearly aren’t enough to keep us enamoured with our mobiles, so O2 has decided to trial TV too…

16 channels will be available to 400 select customers, including BBC1/2, ITV1/2 and Channel 4 as the network looks in a similar direction to rival Orange. Arquiva, until recently known as NTL Broadcast, is working with the former BT offshoot to supply the content via DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds).

In practical terms there is likely to be a fair wait for these services to appear on a mainstream level since only Nokia has so far declared its plans to build a DVB-H compatible handset, but others are certain to follow. O2’s tests are the first seen for the technology in the UK, but experiments have also been carried out in North America, Asia and Europe.

It could be argued that the last thing we need is further anti-social technology introduced for our isolated, head-bobbing, foot tapping selves, but bring it on… other people aren’t that interesting anyway 😉
