O2 Gives BT OpenZone Access To All iPhone Users

Not just iPhone 3G customers who will benefit.

It was a particularly sweet point earlier this week when O2 announced it would be giving free BT OpenZone WiFi hotspot access to iPhone 3G customers in their new tariffs. Well, now original iPhone owners need not feel jealous.

Much in the same way the network improved the original iPhone tariffs in January O2 is again pulling out a deal which it hopes will keep owners happy. From 11 July (co-incidentally iPhone 3G launch day) iPhone users new and old will get access to more than 3,000 BT OpenZone hotspots as well as The Cloud hotspots already available. This brings the total number of free WiFi hotspots to all iPhone customers to more than 9,000.

“By working with partners like BT Openzone we can maximise the web experience for iPhone customers,” said Ronan Dunne, CEO of O2 UK. “Public Wi-Fi hotspots ideally complement our mobile network, providing high speed web browsing and unlimited access to services like the iTunes Wi-Fi store in a wide variety of convenient locations.”

“The availability of BT Openzone on the iPhone 3G is in direct response to strong customer demand for a quality Wi-Fi service on their device,” said BT Wireless Broadband Director Dave Hughes. “BT aims to keep customers best connected, any time and any place. With the iPhone set to become even more popular, BT is providing high-speed internet access at premier locations in the UK.”

Of course the more cynical among you will note the timing of this announcement: having splashed out a considerable sum on their iPhones over the last six months O2 is eager for generation one customers not to feel like second class citizens. Secondly, for those not planning to upgrade this will help to reduce some of the real world speed differences between the two. A bit.

Pat on the back time, guys.
