nVision 08: No nVidia Product Launches Here

Not an event about nVidia, but about visual computing as a whole.

Jen-Hsun Huang made it clear at his keynote that he wants nVision to be about the visual computing industry as a whole, but the extent to which that is the case is quite surprising. Speaking at a round-table conference, Huang commented that nVision won’t see any new nVidia product announcements.

Huang explained that “”nVision isn’t just about the PC ecosystem, it’s for the visual computing industry – this includes film, photography, gaming, industrial design and every aspect of the visual computing ecosystem.

It’s not about us, it’s about our ecosystem. We made a point not to announce products here – this is not a platform for us to announce products, it’s a platform for our ecosystem. Of course, we have to do the heavy lifting this time around, but hopefully next year the whole industry does the heavy lifting.

This is the first industry conference for the visual computing ecosystem. We invited Intel and AMD this year and we want them to be here. I hope they’ll be here next year.””As I commented before, I think nVidia is going to have to change the name of the event it is pioneering if it wants AMD and Intel to play nicely. Personally I think an event like SIGGRAPH, where all the big players come together to discuss things like the next versions of DirectX, OpenGL and ray-tracing (as a general problem, rather than GPU versus CPU arguments) would be a more fitting platform.

So, while it’s a shame that there’s nothing new to see here from nVidia, as Huang said: “Every important industry needs to have a conference and our industry doesn’t have one“.

Anyway, Sixense makes up for nVidia’s lack of product announcements and then some.
