NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 gets Android 6.0 Marshmallow boost

As per usual, this year’s Android update is crawling out of the gates slower than most of us get up from the table after Christmas dinner.

So far, only two Android tablets have the Marshmallow update and both of them are Google-backed products; the HTC-built Nexus 9 and the brand new Google Pixel C.

That changed on Monday, when owners of the gaming-focused NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 began receiving Android 6.0.

The update, as announced on the company’s website, promises the new Google Now on tap functionality, which offers in-app tips from Google’s personal assistant, relating to what’s on screen.

Shield Tablet K1 owners will also benefit from adoptable storage, which means  additional SD cards can be treated just like the built in hard-drive.

NVIDIA is using the update to debut a brand new camera app, which it says is inspired by material design, offers improved burst photo functionality and includes new real-time HD Image Effects.

The company is also including some user interface updates including personalised home and lock screens with different wallpapers, personalised quick settings menus and Google Now voice commands from the lock screen. The update also adds the Fallout Shelter game.

By receiving the Android update, the Shield is way ahead of the rest of the Android pack. Figures released earlier this month showed only 1 in 200 Android devices currently have access to the update.
