Nokia to Hold Special Windows 8 Event on September 5

Nokia has begun sending out press invites for a special Windows 8-themed event on September 5. You can expect to see the company’s initial line-up of Windows 8-powered Lumia smartphones unveiled, possibly starting with a 4.3-inch device.

Recent component leaks appear to hint at a Windows 8 device with a 4.3-inch screen being in the works, though you can probably expect to see more than one device shown at the September 5 event.

The event, to be held in New York, is being billed as a joint Nokia and Microsoft affair. This underlines the special relationship the two companies have shared ever since Nokia announced it was adopting Windows Phone 7 as it’s main OS in February 2011.

Sales haven’t been terribly encouraging for Nokia since that point. Despite the Windows Phone 7 OS garnering largely positive reviews, it’s never really threatened to cut into Android and iOS’s domination of the smartphone market.

That could be set to change with the launch of Windows 8. Microsoft is aiming for an ambitious – in fact pretty much unprecedented – cross-platform approach, with Windows Phone 8 set to share the same core code as Windows 8 for PC and tablet. This should make app development far easier and more attractive to developers.

Despite common elements with the new Microsoft desktop OS, Windows Phone 8 looks like an evolution of the live tile-based UI of Windows Phone 7. There’ll be more of these tiles on screen at a time, reflecting the higher resolution screen hardware that will be supported. It’ll also support multi-core processors, bringing the Windows Phone platform up to the level of its key competitors.

Interestingly, Nokia World 2012 will be kicking off in Helsinki on the
exact same day as this event – which is where many expected the company’s Windows
Phone 8 plans to be revealed.
