Nokia reckons its Sleep sensor can get you 12 minutes extra sleep a night
Nokia unveils a new sleep sensor at CES 2018, improvements to its Health Mate app, and a new Rose Gold finish for the Nokia Steel HR.
Nokia Health, formerly Withings, has some experience in tracking sleep through its wrist-worn wearables. However, its new Nokia Sleep sensor is far more discreet, which might prove beneficial for the many people who don’t like wearing things on their wrist overnight.
The Nokia Sleep takes the form of a Wi-Fi-connected sensor that’s designed to discreetly slip under your mattress. It uses movement to detect your sleep pattern, while also monitoring for snoring. It isn’t the first of this type of device to work this way; devices such as the Beddit took a similar approach.
The Sleep is promising to deliver sleep cycle recognition, letting you know how much time is spent in the deep, light and REM stages of sleep. It will also provide a sleep score to give you an idea of the actual restorative quality of a particular night’s kip.
Nokia says that it has worked with sleep specialist Dr Christopher Winter MD, from the Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine Clinic, to develop a Sleep Smarter program in the Health Mate app. Users can apparently increase their sleep by 12 minutes a night with small changes to behaviour and routine. It doesn’t really sound like much, but for anyone familiar with the ‘snooze’ button on their alarm, 12 minutes might feel like a gift from the gods.

Things get a little more interesting in terms of IFTTT automation. Nokia envisages the Sleep as being able to control your other smart home devices through IFTTT, triggering recipes such as turning off the lights when it detects you’re in bed, or dialling up the thermostat when you get out.
All data syncs with Nokia’s Health Mate app, so if you have any of Nokia’s other health products – the Nokia Body smart scale or Nokia Steel HR, for example – then you can get an all-encompassing view of your important metrics. The Nokia Sleep will be available in Q1 for £100.
On the topic of the Nokia Health app, Nokia also used CES to also announce new Alexa integration. You’ll now be able to ask Alexa just how you’re getting along – something that’s been available with Fitbit devices for a while now.
There’s also a new Rose Gold finish coming to the freshly re-branded Nokia Steel HR with either silicone or leather bands.
