HMD Global will unveil the ‘most awaited’ Nokia-branded smartphone at an event next week, the company has announced.
In a tweet, the company promised an announcement on August 21 and attached an image showing a silhouetted smartphone. While it’s far from confirmed, that ‘most awaited’ handset is likely to be the as-yet-unannounced flagship Nokia 9.
The teaser image didn’t reveal anything else, beyond HMD being “thrilled” about the prospect of revealing it. Given we don’t get that language for any of the other Android devices, we’d say this is likely to be the Nokia 9.
Recent rumours have suggested the Nokia 9 might be the best handset of the new era. Reports have claimed it could come with a Snapdragon 845 processor, coupled with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
A report at the end of June tipped the Nokia 9 would be the first mainstream handset to boast the advanced security tech, while placing it within an LG OLED display. The same report promised the Pro Camera mode, while also tipping the Nokia 9 to be the first handset to arrive with Android 9 Pie out of the box.

The most recent update also suggested the Nokia 9 would arrive at the IFA tech show in Berlin. That show begins at the very end of the month, so an August 21 reveal would be a little earlier than speculated.
Should the announcement pertain to the Nokia 9, it would likely replace the Nokia 8 Sirocco as the firm’s flagship device. Seeing as that phone arrived rocking a 16:9 display and a Snapdragon 835 processor, the Nokia 9 could finally bring HMD into line with other top Android manufacturers.
If you’re not looking for a top-of-the-range device to satisfy your Nokia nostalgia trip, the rebooted Nokia 8110 4G ‘banana phone’ went on sale in the UK earlier this week.
