Nokia 2, 3, 5 and 6 phones are getting upgrades to Android Oreo

HMD’s current lineup of lower-end Nokia phones are set to get an upgrade to Android Oreo ahead of Mobile World Congress 2018.

The Nokia 2, according to a tweet from HMD Global’s chief product officer Juho Sarvikas, will get a direct upgrade to Android 8.1 Oreo seeing it step up from Android Nougat the handset originally shipped with.

The handset will skip the upgrade root to Android 8.0 Oreo due to memory optimisation features which should allow it to better handle the latest features Google has added into Android.

The Nokia 3 on the other hand will get an upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo, which will be rolled out through the Nokia Beta Labs program. And the Nokia 6  and Nokia 5 have also started to receive upgrades to Android 8.0 Oreo.

While Android Oreo has been around for a good few months now since the October debut of Google’s Pixel 2 phones, it still takes some time for it to reach phones from the likes of Samsung, LG and Nokia.

But with the upgrade, users can expect some minor refinements to the mobile operating system’s user interface, as well as improved security features and power saving options.

HMD is expected to reveal the Nokia 9 at MWC 2018 alongside an upgraded Nokia 8 handset, which should see Android 8.1 Oreo baked into them. But while the weeks tick down to the mobile phone showcase, the older Nokia handsets will get a welcome if not overwhelming up given their software a fresh lick of paint.
