Apple’s iPhone 6S launch revealed many rumours to be true, but talk of optical image stabilisation was seemingly fruitless.
The iPhone 6S was heavily rumoured to feature optical image stabilisation (OIS) ahead of the big reveal, but it’s now official that the feature doesn’t appear on the new handset.
Apple made no mention of the feature at its launch event, and there’s no evidence of OIS on the spec listings for the iPhone 6S.
For the unaware, OIS is a type of image stabilisation that uses a physical mechanism built into the camera module to keep your snapper steady.
It reacts to movement so that if your hand shakes while taking a photo, the camera should adjust to account for the movement, thereby reducing image blur.
After last year’s snubbing of OIS for the iPhone 6, we were hopeful that Apple would make amends and include it on its latest handset.
It seemed all the more likely because OIS did appear on 2014’s iPhone 6 Plus. We should note that it has been featured on the new iPhone 6S Plus, but that’s no big surprise.
Nevertheless, Apple made a number of improvements to the camera on both phones, the most notable of which was an upgrade to a 12-megapixel sensor.
That’s an increase on the 8-megapixel snapper that featured on last year’s iPhone duo, and results in a 50% increase to the number of sensor pixels. As such, photos taken on the iPhone 6S will now contain more information than with older Apple smartphone models.
The new cameras are also good for shooting 4K video, a first for Apple’s iPhone series. However, the smartphone displays can’t display that content natively due to insufficient pixels. You’ll only really witness the impact of the 4K videos when viewing the footage on a UHD display.

Apple unveiled its latest smartphone pair at a launch event in San Francisco, held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, today.
The event also saw the reveal of a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, a revamped Apple TV, and a number of details about watchOS.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will be available to pre-order starting on Saturday, September 12, and will go on sale in stores on September 25.
