Nintendo won’t abandon 3D gaming despite 2DS launch
Nintendo has confirmed it has no plans to abandon 3D gaming, despite the recent launch of the Nintendo 2DS gaming console.
Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, has reassured gamers that the 2DS is not an indication that Nintendo is looking to move away from 3D gaming.
“We are not saying that we will abandon 3D or cease to make new propositions in 3D.”
Explaining the addition of the 2DS during a recent investors Q&A session, Iwata confirmed the 2DS was a product that had been long in the works and is an extension of the 3DS brand.
“Generally speaking, it takes approximately one and a half years before we can bring a new hardware system onto the market, and we already realised beforehand that it would be difficult to maximise the sales potential of Nintendo 3DS without an entry-level product ready in time for the release of a new Pokemon title,” said Iwata.
The Nintendo 2DS was released on October 12, the same day as the Pokemon X and Pokemon Y titles, with a price tag of £109.99. Since then, the Nintendo 2DS price was dropped to £99 at the majority of UK retailers.
“We are offering such an option in order to further propel the popularity of the Nintendo 3DS platform in the overseas market. Nintendo 2DS is, however, simply one of the options for consumers and we will continue to offer the existing Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL platforms in the overseas market.”
Further highlighting Nintendo’s continued dedication to 3D gaming, Iwata said upcoming 3DS title The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is “a superb showcase of the 3D effect.”
Nintendo reported 2 million 3DS and 3DS XL sales for Q2 2013, putting the total lifetime figure at 35 million.
That figure is expected to jump next quarter with Pokemon software availability and the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 3DS XL console arriving soon.
