Nintendo makes another loss despite Mario Kart 8 success

Nintendo has reported yet another quarterly loss despite the successful launch of Mario Kart 8.

The latest addition to Nintendo’s renowned kart racer series has sold an impressive 2.82 million copies after just a month on sale, which represent more than half of the 4.39 million Wii U games sold in the entire quarter (which runs from April to the end of June).

Its seems as if Mario Kart 8 was unable to drive the company to broader success, however. With just 510,000 Wii U consoles sold during the most recent quarter, it means that Mario Kart 8 failed to significantly increase sales of Nintendo’s beleaguered console. Most of the hit game’s sales were to existing Wii U owners.

It brings total Wii U console sales to 6.68 million since its launch in November 2012. To place that into context, Sony’s PS4 hit the 7 million mark back in April, despite launching a whole year after Nintendo’s console.

Even Microsoft’s Xbox One, which has received its fair share of knocks since launching in the same month as the PS4, has passed 5 million sales.

As ever, things are looking a little rosier for Nintendo on the handheld front. The company sold 820,000 3DS units during the quarter, and 8.57 million games.

All in all, though, it’s not a particularly pretty picture for the Kyoto company. Despite sales of 74.6 billion yen (around £431 million), Nintendo has reported a loss of 9.4 billion yen (around £54 million) for the quarter.

Having by most accounts ‘won’ E3 in June of this year, here’s hoping that Nintendo can turn things around with more excellent Wii U games of a similar quality to Mario Kart 8. It won’t help that one of those potential hits, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, has just been delayed until January 2015 in Europe.
