Nintendo has denied recent reports claiming that it will halt Wii U production by the end of 2016.
Yesterday we brought you the news from respected Japanese new outlet Nikkei that Nintendo would stop producing Wii U consoles this year.
Indeed, the report claimed that Nintendo had already stopped producing some Wii U accessories, and that it was looking to run down its Wii U stock in time for the launch of its new Nintendo NX console.
Now, however, Nintendo has told ITMedia that this report is incorrect.
“That’s not an official announcement,” said Nintendo (via Engadget). “We plan to continue production through the rest of the year.”

Nintendo will reveal more concerning its mysterious NX console some time this year. Rumour has it that the device will somehow operate in conjunction with PCs, smartphones, and even other consoles, and that it’ll be comprised of a base console unit and a handheld.
It’s also been suggested that Nintendo could launch a game subscription service comprised of 150 rotating games. Of course, these are all just rumours at this point, and we’ll have to wait and see what Nintendo has in store.

Regardless of which report is accurate, it seems likely that the Wii U only really has the rest of 2016 to make any sort of impression.
