Nintendo apparently developing donut-shaped device

Nintendo is working on a new donut-shaped device, according to a new report from Japan.

The Japan Times claims that Sharp is going to supply Nintendo with a special kind of LCD technology that can be freely shaped according to demand.

Sharp unveiled the so-called Free-Form Display earlier in the year. Its bezel can be bent, allowing for far more exotic designs than the simple flat rectangles we’ve grown used to.

In Nintendo’s case, this will apparently manifest itself in a new small device with a hole at the centre of the display, resulting in a “doughnut-shaped” piece of technology.

The article speculates that this could be a new portable games console to replace the Nintendo 3DS, which has undergone a number of revisions now.

However, just as likely (and perhaps more so) is the decidedly less exciting prospect that Nintendo is going to apply this new technology in its forthcoming sleep monitor.

Back in October, the Kyoto-based video games company announced that it was developing such a device, which would be the size of a hand and would sit on a user’s bedside table. It would then use microwave transmission sensors to track your sleep.

It’s all part of Nintendo’s Quality of Life (QOL) venture, which will see the company branching out into healthcare-related products.

The question is, will this new device be donut-shaped, or will the next Nintendo handheld console look like something picked up from the roadside of Mario Kart 8‘s Sweet Sweet Canyon?
