Nikon has announced it is working on a follow-up to the full-frame D810 SLR in the form of the D850.

Yes, rather than announcing the camera will launch soon, the company simply revealed the D850 is in development, suggesting a release is still some way off.
Which means, despite the news, we have very little in the way of details about the new device, aside from this video which gives away one new feature:
It seems we can expect the D850 to arrive with an 8K time-lapse function, though the teaser clip itself wasn’t uploaded in full 8K.
We also have no idea what the camera will look like at this point, but Nikon claims the D850 will be “a formidable tool for those who will not compromise on exceptional image quality and versatility, including aspiring and professional photographers, and hobbyists who capture landscapes, commercial sports, fashion and weddings, as well as multimedia content creators.”
It adds that the full-frame FX-format digital SLR camera “will exceed the expectations of the vast range of photographers who seek high resolution and high speed capabilities that only a Nikon of this calibre, complemented by NIKKOR lenses, can offer.”

Despite the lack of detail, we’d expect the D850 to house an updated sensor in a D500-like body, which would mean the inclusion of a tilting touchscreen, plus built-in Wi-Fi and NFC.
Whether Nikon will make a much-needed advance in live view autofocus remains to be seen, too, but we’re hoping for a range of improvements, including more S Raw format options to reduce the image size without a digital crop.
The current Nikon D810 has a 9-million-pixel, uncompressed 12-bit raw file option that gives a second option for photographers who don’t always need full resolution.
Nikon simply states the D850 is “coming soon”, so, as mentioned, we have nothing like a concrete release date for the time being, but stay tuned as the company promises more will be revealed in the future.
