Nikon J1 is Fastest-Selling Mirrorless Camera Ever

The latest news and reviews from Las Vegas: CES 2012 Special Report

Nikon’s J1 compact system camera has become the fastest-selling mirrorless camera since the category was established, selling more in the space of a week than any other during the Christmas rush. It is the most popular camera of its type in the UK, winning Nikon the no. 2 position in the compact system race.

In the week before Christmas, the Nikon J1 outsold its closest rival, the Panasonic G3, by a ratio of 2:1. We imagine Nikon’s effective television advertising campaign – which many of you may have noticed over the last month – had a hand in this success, positioning the camera well as a sensible upgrade from a standard compact.Nikon J1

The Nikon J1 is the entry-level model from Nikon’s 1 range of mirrorless cameras, the V1 sitting one step up. Now available for under £450, it’s not hard to see how it lured many buyers away from a budget DSLR, offering the “serious” feature of interchangeable lenses without the bulk of an SLR.

It features a 10.1-megapixel sensor, 1080p video recording and 3in screen. The standard kit lens has a 10-30mm focal length, with a dual-lens bundle with 30-110mm glass available if you can stomach an extra hundred quid plus change. As you can tell from our solid-but-unspectacular seven out of ten rating, it may not be one for the photography purists, but we’ll happily toast to Nikon’s success. We’ll have more news from Nikon over the next few days, with updates from the CES 2012 conference in Las Vegas.
