Nikon has announced a new super-telephoto 800mm, fixed local length lens as part of its Nikkor line-up.
Aimed at professional photographers, it has a maximum aperture of f/5.6, and is fully compatible with Nikon’s recently expanded range of FX-format DSLR cameras.
It will also be the longest focal-length lens in the collection to feature autofocus (Nikon has made longer lenses in the past but not with an AF feature).
Nikon believes it’s ideally suited for outdoor use, such as sporting events and wildlife photography. Backing up the optics are dust and water resistance.
The company will be showcasing its new creation to pro photographers at the British Open golf championship in Lancashire from July 19-22 (which Nikon sponsors), as well as the Photokina show in Cologne, Germany from September 18.
Nikon has not yet specified a precise release date or retail price, though as the old saying goes, if you need to ask, you probably can’t afford it.
