Nikon 1 S1 entry-level compact system camera unveiled

Nikon has unveiled the first of a new range of entry-level compact system cameras in the shape of the Nikon 1 S1.

The Nikon 1 S1 provides an entry point to the kind of ultra-portable cameras with interchangeable lenses seen in the Nikon 1 J and Nikon 1 V series.

Indeed, the announcement of the Nikon 1 S1 accompanies the launch of another addition to the J-series, the Nikon 1 J3.

Nikon 1 S1 Specs
The Nikon 1 S1 has most of the features found in its bigger, more expensive brothers, but in a slightly pared-down fashion.

Like the rest of the Nikon 1 range, it sports a 1-inch CX image sensor, but unlike the Nikon 1 J3 it’s capable of capturing images at 10.1-megapixels rather than 14.2-megapixels. It has an ISO range of 100 to 6400.

As with the aforementioned Nikon 1 J3, the Nikon 1 S1 runs on the newly enhanced Expeed 3A processing engine, which enables a number of advanced features. This includes an enhanced hybrid autofocus system that allows for 15fps continuous shooting. Features such as Smart Photo Selector (pick the best images from 15) and Slow View (string 15 images together for a slow motion view) also mirror the J and V ranges.

There’s a 3-inch LCD display on offer here, but with a 460k resolution it’s around half as sharp as other handsets in the Nikon 1 series. However, there is a new graphical user interface to make operation easier.

The Nikon 1 S1 is compatible with the custom 1 Nikkor range of lenses, and it also boasts an automatic pop-up flash.

Nikon 1 S1 Release Date and Price

There’s no news on price or availability of the Nikon 1 S1, but you can bet it will come in as the cheapest of the three Nikon 1 ranges.
