Nike+ Running app gets Spotify Premium integration

Nike and Apple have been bedfellows for quite some time now, but the sportswear giant started to play the musical field in order to boost its popular fitness tracking suite.

The Nike+ Running app for iOS will now feature full Spotify Premium integration, allowing subscribers to access the 30-million strong library of tracks without leaving the fitness portal.

As well as the handiness of that integration, Nike is also introducing a neat feature, akin to Spotify’s new cadence-matching running mode.

Nike’s Pace Stations is a slight variant on the formula as, rather than matching your pace, it asks you to set a target pace and curates a playlist based on that.

While Spotify’s version matches your current rhythm, Nike’s will motivate runners to push a little harder to reach their targets.

Once the target pace has been entered, Nike will use the Spotify library in order to curate a playlist of 100 songs, which should even keep marathoners sated for the duration of their session.

Once the service launches on July 20, Nike+ users will be able to take the new tools for a spin (or a jog) free of charge. Spotify is giving them a one-week free trial of Spotify Premium and, if the user doesn’t mind entering payment information, they can get two months.

The partnership with Spotify is significant for Nike, given its history with Apple. We’d have expected Apple Music to be at the forefront of such a partnership, but it seems Cupertino may be more focused on getting its own house in order before offering its streaming service to third parties.
