Nexus 2016 looks set to emulate iOS 9.3’s Night Shift mode

Google’s next Nexus phones will feature a new iOS 9 Night Shift-like mode and a tweak to the way the ambient display setting is handled, according to a new report.

According to Android Police, the new HTC-made Nexus phones will include a mode that emulates the iOS 9 Night Shift setting. This means that the picture takes on a reddish tint at night to minimise the disruption to sleep patterns caused by blue light.

It will be called Night Light here, and it will be possible to set it to come on automatically using local sunrise and sunset data – or through a pre-set timer. Just to reiterate – this won’t be built into Android 7.0 Nougat itself, so we may not see it coming to previous Nexus devices.

The report provides screenshots of the new Night Light mode in action, so this is looking like much more than a mere rumour.

Another new Nexus 2016 UI element that the report highlights is a revised ambient display setting. Right now, Nexus phones will display basic information (such as the time and notifications) when you pick them up. The new Nexus phones will allow you to access this feature through a double-tap gesture in addition to that pick-up method.

It’s a feature that’s been implemented on other Android phones for a while now, but we’re glad to see it coming to the Nexus line.

Also shown is the presence of a two-tab settings menu, with the second tab incorporating a new Support section. This is expected to incorporate a screen-sharing support feature for those who need guiding through specific functions of the phone.
