New YouTube Go app lets you watch videos offline

Google has announced the new YouTube Go app which will allow users to save videos for offline viewing.

Announced at the Google for India event in New Delhi, the app will also enable local sharing of videos, without the need for an internet connection.

It’s been designed to make life easier for internet users in India who may not have the most reliable data connections.

Eventually, Google intends to launch the app in other countries, but India will be the first to test out the new software.

The app will reportedly allow users to choose quality and file size when downloading videos, giving them a clear idea of the amount of data it will use.

Google has built YouTube Go as an extension to the Smart Offline feature that was debuted in India earlier this year.

The company announced several other new projects at the Delhi event, including an expansion of its Google Station initiative that began in India and will now see free Wi-Fi offered at public locations around the world.

Alongside its YouTube and Wi-Fi announcements, the firm also introduced a new version of the Play Store, optimised for 2G connectivity, and new data-saving features for its Chrome browser.

Indian users can sign up to try YouTube Go now, with Google yet to confirm when the app will make it to other countries.
