Three fine examples to assist the geographically challenged speed demon.
The rise of TomTom and its GO brand has been nothing short of spectacular. Launched only in 2004, its car navigation solutions became an instant hit and with a radically revamped line up on the way, this doesn’t look set to change anytime soon.
The new GO 510, 710 and 910 models are the new boys on the block and their revilaised styling immediately stands out along with their 4in widescreen LCD touchscreens – a first (that we know of) in the portable navigation sector.
TomTom is also promising ‘greatly improved’ GPS performance and ‘hundreds of features and software improvements’ though, at this stage, it declined to go into any great detail as to how this was achieved or what they are. That said, it did spill the beans on its new bundled software application: TomTom HOME. This works as a portal allowing users to dock the new GO range with their computers to manage, download and store data.
Furthermore the company’s pre-installed Safety Camera (that’s their official name?!) database is now available across the range. TomTom says this feature makes it ‘easier and safer to navigate to your destination’ which is a rather damning indictment of Safety/Speed/Tax Cameras (and one that I wholeheartedly endorse).
As for the headlining GO 910, this geographically knowledgeable headliner not only has maps covering the whole of Europe, but also the USA and Canada. It even has a built in MP3 player for audiobooks, music and podcasts and a text-to-speech reader so you can listen to the content of documents on the move.
Away from the devices themselves, TomTom is boosting its PLUS content and services package to include info on road conditions, while an RDS/TMC Traffic Receiver has been added to the list of available accessories. Plug it into any of the new TomTom devices and it provides you with the bleeding obvious.
The new range arrives in April with prices set to be released closer to launch. If you have no sense of direction but like to get to where you’re going fast and fine free they should make you very happy indeed (I can just feel the love in the room).
