New Roku Plex App released
Plex, the app that helps you sort and manage your media, has been updated for the Roku platform.
As well as a fresh new design, Plex claims the app is faster, more intuitive and smoother than before on products like the Roku Streaming Stick.
The new app comes with video and music playback, cinema trailers and the Plex Companion second screen remote control.
The traditional set-top box design of the previous Roku Plex app has given way to a look and feel more akin to the Chromecast Plex app.
Photos, playlists and channels will not be supported initially, but Plex has promised that these will be arriving in the near future.
The new Roku Plex app will only be available to Plex Pass users to start with, a release date for non-paying Plex users has not yet been announced.
What is Plex?
Plex is based on the popular XBMC (Xbox Media Centre). It lets you manage all the media on your PC or NAS server so it is available on other devices, like your Smart TV, with a load of information about movies and TV series automatically added from third party sites. It’s a bit like Netflix for your personal library of content.
Plex is free to use but some features are only available with a subscription (or one off larger payment) called Plex Pass. This provides access to PS4 and Xbox One Plex apps, Smart TV apps, Cloud Sync and a host of other features including the ability to download and watch content on your smartphone via Plex Sync.
