New Nexus (2016): Is Huawei building Google’s next smartphone?

Update: Huawei provided TrustedReviews with the following comment:

“We don’t comment on future products, as a matter of policy. Huawei is committed to creating the world’s most compelling and innovative devices, offering an exceptional performance and outstanding user experience.

We are proud to have worked with Google, which is strong in innovation, on the Nexus 6P and will continue to collaborate in the future, such as our support for Daydream, the recently-announced platform for high performance mobile VR.”

Original Article (3/6/2016):

Google’s Nexus 6P, built by Huawei last year, was a resounding success, and restored faith in the Nexus line-up. Is it more of the same for 2016?

Huawei is going to mastermind the new Nexus smartphone for this year, according to a new report. During an interview with GearBurn, Charlene Munilall, the GM for Huawei’s Consumer Business Group in South Africa, seemed to confirm the company’s plans to build the Nexus (2016). She is quoted as saying:

“The Nexus product is a very niche product. The techies love it but there’s a very small number of people that buy it. That said, the distributors, our open market, do bring in the device [to South Africa]. We’re doing the Nexus again this year, by the way.”

Unfortunately, we can’t verify the validity of this interview, or the information. However, we’ve contacted both Huawei and Google to confirm whether this information is true.

The Nexus 6P was the first smartphone ever built by Huawei for Google. It launched late last year, landing alongside the LG-built Nexus 5X. However, the Nexus 6P received most of the critical acclaim, praised for its impressive performance and attractive design. If Huawei is behind this year’s Nexus phone too, it’s likely that many fans of the series will be pleased.

Of course, neither Google nor Huawei have issued any official confirmation about the manufacturer of the 2016 Nexus smartphone, so take this report with due caution.
