Mozilla wants your views on its foxy new Firefox logos
There’s more than one way to draw a fox. The Firefox logo has been with us for some time, but Mozilla has decided it’s time for the furry/fiery mascot to get a makeover, and it’s seeking the views of its fans.
Or, as the Mozilla blog post announcing the change rather unsettlingly puts it: “Recolouring that logo or dissecting the fox could only take us so far.”
With that somewhat grisly image disturbingly in mind, the company has come up with two “design system approaches”. I am absolutely not a graphic designer, but the words I’d use to describe them are “geometric” and “swooshy”.
To be clear, this isn’t The X Factor for Firefox logos. There will be no public vote, and the company is not hoping to crowdsource the ideal solution. Rather, the company is just seeking general feedback from the community, based on five factors:
- Does this feel like Firefox?
- Do the sets hold together cohesively?
- Are they flexible enough to embrace additional products as the Firefox boffins come up with them?
- Do the logos scream “speed, safety, reliability, wit and innovation”?
- Do the logos suggest a company that “puts people over profit”?
Quite a big ask for a series of logos, but that’s what Mozilla is looking for all the same.
So how is the community responding to the two sets of options? At the time of writing, generally positively, though more than 50 people have pointed out that the system one master logo bears a similarity to the one employed by Gitlab.
“If you had said that system 1’s Masterbrand was a rebranding of Gitlab, I’d believe you,” reads one comment.

“Regardless of master-brand choice, I gotta admit that I really dig the merchandising options already,” wrote another Firefox fan.
At the time of publication, it looks like there’s a very slight preference for system one, but as Mozilla points out this isn’t a vote so much as a focus group starting point.
“Although the products and projects are real, these design systems are still a work of fiction,” the blog post explains. “Each individual icon will undergo several rounds of refinement or may change entirely, between now and their respective product launches. Our focus at this point is on the system.”
