New firmware update could make PS4 owners feel loved again

Despite an influx of awesome new games like Overwatch, Uncharted 4 and No Man’s Sky, it’s a frustrating time to be a current-gen PS4 owner.

With Sony set to reveal a new and improved PS4 Neo next month, that’ll probably supercharge the experience and better handle the demands of VR, some gamers are worried their little old PS4 won’t be up to the task for much longer.

However, Sony has given those neglected souls a little something to look forward to with news of an upcoming firmware update that’ll improve the UX considerably.

The new 4.0 operating system, which will become available for the company’s beta testers on Tuesday, will certainly speed things up somewhat.

Firstly pressing and holding the PS button on the DualShock 4 controller will bring up a revamped Quick Menu, that only takes up a fraction of the screen.

This makes it easy to quickly see who is online, change a track on Spotify, and view the trophies you’ve won for the game you’re playing.

There’s also an overall UI refresh which Sony says “includes a range of changes, like revised pop-up notifications, updated system icons and new system backgrounds to choose from. As a whole, it all adds up to a more refined and easy to use UI.”

The Share Menu is getting a revamp, akin to the Quick Menu, which will make the sharing of screenshots and video faster and more streamlined. Sony is also significantly increasing the length of videos you can share on Twitter, from 10 seconds to 140.

Finally, there’ll soon be folders that enables users to group apps together and the Library will offer a new tab featuring all of your purchased content.

The system firmware 4.0 beta is available to those enrolled in Sony’s testing program. Unfortunately, sign up closed a good while ago.
