New Bluetooth standard could enable surround sound with existing speakers

While many tech enthusiasts have elected not to buy a surround sound system for their living rooms, most of us have an abundance of bluetooth-enabled speakers knocking around, right?

Wouldn’t it be great if we could strategically place these around a living space and convert them to a makeshift surround sound set-up for movie nights? The development of a new Bluetooth standard aims to achieve exactly that.

The TAP TV standard would enable a number of Bluetooth audio devices to pair up to offer a proper home theatre experience with all the requisite sounds coming from all of the correct places.

TAP stands for Tempow Audio Profile TV and would play nice with Bluetooth-enabled products like TVs and streaming boxes – without the need for a receiver or additional devices (via SlashGear).

Such devices could be paired with a number of speakers in order to a create 5.1 or 3.1 channel set-ups simply by arranging Bluetooth speakers strategically around the room.

The standard looks very much to the future and it’ll take TV and set-top box manufacturers to adopt the tech before it’ll be available to owners of multiple Bluetooth speakers. From our understanding it doesn’t appear as if this could be retrofitted to existing Bluetooth-enabled televisions.

Elsewhere, the tech could also be used to assist households who want to watch movies together, but would prefer for the audio track to be transmitted in different languages. With TAP TV different sets of Bluetooth headphones could receive the audio in Spanish or English, for example.

If you’ve heard of Tempow before, it’s because the tech has already appeared within the Moto X4 smartphone, enabling the handset to connect to four Bluetooth devices at the same time. This makes it easy to create a multi-room audio experience similar to a Sonos set-up without springing for the expense.
