New Apple TV to run full iOS 9

Apple’s new Apple TV device looks set for a 9 September launch, confirms a new report, and will run on iOS 9.

We heard well-sourced claims at the end of July that Apple would be launching a brand-new Apple TV set-top-box, complete with faster internal components and a dedicated App Store, at its (still unconfirmed) 9 September iPhone event.

That initial report also revealed that Apple wasn’t ready to launch its live TV subscription service alongside the new hardware. That point was confirmed separately only last week, with claims of a 2016 launch for the live TV component.

Now we have a new report from a third source claiming that the Apple TV will relaunch in September. More interestingly, 9to5Mac also has something to say on the device’s software.

Apparently, the new slimmer and wider Apple TV will run on iOS 9, Apple’s forthcoming new mobile OS. Indeed, according to the report, it’s thanks to work on this operating system that Apple decided to delay the new Apple TV from its original WWDC unveiling.

Apple was apparently concerned that pushing to launch a new Apple TV based on iOS 9 earlier in the year would compromise engineering resources on the O  – particularly since the software is more focused on polish after the major additions of iOS 7 and iOS 8.

Just to reiterate, this will be the first Apple TV to run on a full iOS core. Naturally it will be a TV-optimised version of the operating system, but it should serve to support new features such as the previously reported Siri integration.

The report also reiterates that the new Apple TV will come with a larger remote control with new, more tactile buttons. It will also support touch and gesture-based inputs, as well as Bluetooth and infrared connectivity.
