New Apple TV coming next week

The new Apple TV will be released next week, according to company CEO Tim Cook.

Apple announced the new set-top-box at its September 9 launch event, but gave a rather vague release date of late October.

Now Cook, who was speaking at WSJD Live, has confirmed that the new Apple TV will launch at the end of next week. In other words, when Apple said the end of October, it really meant it.

It seems Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for the Apple TV from Monday.

Cook took the opportunity to restate that the new Apple TV will form the foundation of a new approach to TV. He claimed that tradition linear TV viewing was on the way out, and that in Apple TV the company had “developed an infrastructure to fix [a] terrible broken thing that none of us like.”

The new Apple TV is a much thicker box than before, reflecting its leap in power and functionality. It run on the same A8 CPU that powers the iPhone 6, which will power a new tvOS operating system based on iOS 9.

This will provide a powerful search experience that, in conjunction with Siri, will enable you to quickly find media content across multiple apps.

Also facilitating this will be the new Apple TV remote. Besides a mic for voice recognition purposes, the remote will have a touch pad for speedy navigation, as well as motion sensors for gaming purposes.

One thing Apple doesn’t have in place for the new Apple TV launch is its much-rumoured live TV streaming service. Last week news emerged that the service remained in limbo as Apple struggles to tie powerful US networks down to a deal.

The new Apple TV will start from $149 for a 32GB model, while the 64GB model will cost $199.
