New 27-inch Apple iMac with 5K Retina display

Apple has just announced a brand-new iMac with the firm’s first 5K Retina display.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior VP of marketing, revealed the new device, talking it up as “an incredible feat of engineering.”

Features

The 27-inch display has an insanely high resolution of 5120 x 2880 – that’s around 14.7 million pixels.

It is the world’s highest resolution display,” boasted Schiller, revealing that new iMac offers 67% more pixels than 4K.

In fact, the Retina 5K display actually carries around seven times more pixels than your standard 1080p HD television.

The new device is also incredibly thin, with a super-svelte 5mm profile.

Despite the huge resolution increase, the screen actually uses 30% less energy than previous iMac iterations, thanks to faster pixel charging and reduced pixel cross-talk.

In terms of specs, there’s a 3.5GHz quad-core i5 processor, with an upgrade to 4.0GHz i7 should your wallet be overflowing with cash.

Graphical processing heft comes courtesy of an AMD Radeon R9 M290X chip, upgradeable to M295X.

There’s also Thunderbolt 2, a faster 1TB fusion drive for storage, 8GB of memory, and an improved environmental rating.

Release date and price

The US pricing for the new iMac is $2499, which translates to roughly £1556, and starts shipping today.

Schiller closed with: “I can’t wait for you all to see it and experience the incredible images it produces.”
